Goals:
- Distribute reviews to people who can do the reviews
- Not prevent anything from getting done
- Allow giving away more commit access

Anti-goals:
- Silo people into particular areas
- Discourage contributing to any area

This was drafted by glancing at git logs. It is not likely to be very
accurate; the goal here is that we figure out a way to distribute
reviews to the right people.

eldritch horrorsandRaito Bezarius 749afbbe99 libstore: don't default build-dir to temp-dir
if a build directory is accessible to other users it is possible to
smuggle data in and out of build directories. usually this ins only
a build purity problem, but in combination with other issues it can
be used to break out of a build sandbox. to prevent this we default
to using a subdirectory of nixStateDir (which is more restrictive).

Fixes CVE-2025-52991.

1e34c37477 flake/inputs: 24.11-small -> 25.05-small
We upgrade to 25.05 release, which contains the curl commit
https://github.com/curl/curl/commit/5fbd78eb2dc4afbd8884e8eed27147fc3d4318f6
done in
https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/396200#issuecomment-2795944006.

This fixes HTTP transfers generating arbitrary errors and possibly
failing unusually.

Users who are already depending on 25.05-small or a recent unstable
already had the fix.

Special mention to the Linux kernel who gave me the opportunity to get
on a 24 hours bisection side quest to fix the local release engineering
test.

Special thanks to everyone who had to endure me ranting.

a527bb251a libstore/build: cgroup delegation to sandbox
We offer full cgroup delegation to our sandbox now, required for running
containers inside the sandbox.

To run systemd-nspawn or containers managers inside the sandbox, there
is a need for one extra ingredient now: control over your own cgroup
subtree inside the sandbox.

If, in addition, you need multiple UIDs, for e.g. rootless usecases, you
need to run with the `uid-range` system feature.

Therefore, when the daemon or Nix runs under the right condition, e.g.
systemd-style delegation of the cgroup subtree while placing the
nix-daemon in a supervisor sub-cgroup, we create a new sub-cgroup for
each build based on the build UID and delegate that sub-cgroup to the
builder's process.

Additionally, `uid-range` always request the `cgroups` feature now, as
`uid-range` builds would probably always benefit from having cgroups
delegated, but the converse is not true.

Inspired from https://github.com/NixOS/nix/pull/11412 with a different
design that does not use function-local statics to derive the root
cgroup.

Raito Bezarius b70bbbe680 misc/pre-commit: add automatic clang-format of changed lines
Lix has a style guide:
https://wiki.lix.systems/books/lix-contributors/page/code but
contributors like me have been unable to enforce it, which is sad.

To avoid further violations of that style guide, we enable a pre-commit
hook for clang formatting of the changed lines.

Commentator2.0 f7914e89e6 tests/functional2: add framework for lang tests
This creates a framework similar to the old lang.sh from functional.
Some notable changes:
- instead of having a .flags file, a test.toml can declare flags
- additionally the test.toml can also declare extra files and multiple
runners for the given input file.
- there won't be any old tests hanging around anymore which weren't
deleted properly in the installation
- all files for a single test are defined decleratively and there won't
be any residues

Tests can be placed within the functional2/lang folder
most migrations should be rather clean

Implements: #825

Alois Wohlschlager 82aa1ccab4 fish-completion: leave the shell prompt intact
When generating shell completions, no logging output should be visible because
it would destroy the shell prompt. Originally this was attempted to be done by
simply disabling the progress bar (ca946860ce),
since the situation is particularly bad there (the screen clearing required for
the rendering ends up erasing the shell prompt). Due to overlooking the
implementation of this hack, it was accidentally undone during a later change
(0dd1d8ca1c).
Since even with the hack correctly in place, it is still possible to mess up
the prompt by logging output (for example warnings for disabled experimental
features, or messages generated by `builtins.trace`), simply send it to the bit
bucket where it belongs. This was already done for bash and zsh
(9d840758a8), and it seems that fish was simply
missed at that time. The last trace of the no-longer-working and obsolete hack
is deleted too.

Jade Lovelace 0c76195351 build: remove expect as a dependency
I was packaging Lix 2.91 for nixpkgs and was annoyed at the expect
dependency. Turns out that you can replace unbuffer with a pretty-short
Python script.

It became less short after I found out that Linux was converting \n to
\r\n in the terminal subsystem, which was not very funny, but is at
least solved by twiddling termios bits.

eldritch horrors e6cd67591b libexpr: rewrite the parser with pegtl instead of flex/bison
this gives about 20% performance improvements on pure parsing. obviously
it will be less on full eval, but depending on how much parsing is to be
done (e.g. including hackage-packages.nix or not) it's more like 4%-10%.

this has been tested (with thousands of core hours of fuzzing) to ensure
that the ASTs produced by the new parser are exactly the same as the old
one would have produced. error messages will change (sometimes by a lot)
and are not yet perfect, but we would rather leave this as is for later.

test results for running only the parser (excluding the variable binding
code) in a tight loop with inputs and parameters as given are promising:

  - 40% faster on lix's package.nix at 10000 iterations
  - 1.3% faster on nixpkgs all-packages.nix at 1000 iterations
  - equivalent on all of nixpkgs concatenated at 100 iterations
(excluding invalid files, each file surrounded with parens)

more realistic benchmarks are somewhere in between the extremes, parsing
once again getting the largest uplift. other realistic workloads improve
by a few percentage points as well, notably system builds are 4% faster.

Jade Lovelace 0f99ed43f1 build-time: remove 20% more by PCH'ing C++ stdlib
It seems like someone implemented precompiled headers a long time ago
and then it never got ported to meson or maybe didn't work at all.

This is, however, blessedly easy to simply implement. I went looking for
`#define` that could affect the result of precompiling the headers, and
as far as I can tell we aren't doing any of that, so this should truly
just be free build time savings.

Previous state:
Compilation (551 times):
  Parsing (frontend): 1302.1 s
  Codegen & opts (backend): 956.3 s

New state:
**** Time summary:
Compilation (567 times):
  Parsing (frontend): 1123.0 s
  Codegen & opts (backend): 1078.1 s

I wonder if the "regression" in codegen time is just doing the PCH
operation a few times, because meson does it per-target.

Nikodem Rabuliński f894cce79b Always initialize curl in parent process on darwin
Because of an objc quirk[1], calling curl_global_init for the first time
after fork() will always result in a crash.
Up until now the solution has been to set
OBJC_DISABLE_INITIALIZE_FORK_SAFETY for every nix process to ignore
that error.
This is less than ideal because we were setting it in package.nix,
which meant that running nix tests locally would fail because
that variable was not set.
Instead of working around that error we address it at the core -
by calling curl_global_init inside initLibStore, which should mean
curl will already have been initialized by the time we try to do so in

Qyriad 4f98d21b71 flake: move the pre-commit definition to its own file
It's a good hundred LOC, and wasn't coupled to the actual flake logic at
all.

Rebecca Turner 2a98ba8b97 Add pre-commit checks
The big ones here are `trim-trailing-whitespace` and `end-of-file-fixer`
(which makes sure that every file ends with exactly one newline
character).

Jade Lovelace 412a9c9f67 Enable clang build timing analysis
I didn't enable this by default for clang due to making the build time
10% worse or so. Unfortunate, but tbh devs for whom 10% of build time is
not *that* bad should probably simply enable this.

eldritch horrors 279e30e7ef build: replace changelog-d with local script
hacking changelog-d to support not just github but also forgejo and
gerrit is a lot more complicated than it's worth, even moreso since
the entire thing can just as well be done with ~60 lines of python.
this new script is also much cheaper to instantiate (being python),
so having it enabled in all shells is far less of a hassle.

we've also adjusted existing release notes that referenced a gerrit
cl to auto-link to the cl in question, making the diff a bit bigger

Jade Lovelace 985bd5eb9f un-ups your start
We do not need upstart, it is so thoroughly obsolete that we should not
care about supporting it.

Eelco Dolstra e53e5c38d4 Add a setting for configuring the SSL certificates file
This provides a platform-independent way to configure the SSL
certificates file in the Nix daemon. Previously we provided
instructions for overriding the environment variable in launchd, but
that obviously doesn't work with systemd. Now we can just tell users
to add

  ssl-cert-file = /etc/ssl/my-certificate-bundle.crt

to their nix.conf.
