This is a collection of Lix plugins that showcase how to write one for
various usecases.
The first is a mTLS store plugin that enable mTLS cache URIs
(`https+mtls://`).
We enable meson build system support for this plugin but we are not
going to distribute it in the official packaging of Lix, we will
repackage each relevant plugin downstream in Nixpkgs.
These plugins have *NO* guarantee support, they are provided as useful
references and are possibly production-ready if your usecase is simple
enough.

resemblances but our APIs are different, the tests harness is mostly
from CppNix).

Historically, Nix would support copying certificate authorities inside
the sandbox so you could use them.
In addition to that, the primitives consisting of leaking environment
variables via `impureEnvVars` and `extra-sandbox-paths` to render paths
external to the sandbox visible to the builder would also constitute a
mechanism to expose special inodes which should have no influence on the
output result, e.g. interception CAs.
Unfortunately, in nixpkgs, `lib.fetchers.proxyImpureEnvVars` set
`NIX_SSL_CERT_FILE` as an impure environment variable.
A confused user may set `ssl-cert-file` via `NIX_SSL_CERT_FILE` outside the
builder believing that this will set magically the right
`NIX_SSL_CERT_FILE` inside the sandbox, but this is not true.
The combination of impure environment variables and setting `caFile`
creates a weird interaction where `NIX_SSL_CERT_FILE` points to an
"outside the builder's world" inode *AND* `ssl-cert-file` creates
this very same certificate file in /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt
without rewriting the environment variable.
This footgun is closed by making these two features mutually
incompatible with a warning and forcibly rewriting the SSL family of
environment variables even if it was set via impure environment
variables.
Users who truly meant to use `impureEnvVars` can obtain the right
behavior by setting `ssl-cert-file` to an empty string and will have to use
`extra-sandbox-paths`.
Users who meant to use `ssl-cert-file` will have everything work
automatically with a warning hinting at nixpkgs *fixing its own bug*,
i.e. passing `NIX_SSL_CERT_FILE` as an impure environment variable and
expecting the Nix interpreter to magically reconcile the diverging
values or expecting the user to actually do the work to render the path
visible available via `extra-sandbox-paths`.

`pathContentsGood` is used to assess the validity of a path as part of
derivation goals *in repair mode*.
When repair is used with a diverted store, i.e. a store where
fsPath(toRealPath(s)) != fsPath(s) for s a store path, this result in
utterly broken behavior because it will attempt to assess the goodness
of the *logical* store locations, most of the time: /nix/store/...
So, if you are repairing your system using a live NixOS ISO. Your ISO
contains a `/nix/store` (assumed to be good) and you repair your system
which is rooted at /mnt and contains its own /nix/store, that is, a Nix
store at /mnt/nix/store.
Performing the following operation `nix-store --verify --repair --store
/mnt` will assess the contents goodness of the ISO's Nix store.
To avoid this, we assess the path existence of the *physical path*, aka
the result of `store.toRealPath` applied to a *logical* store path
string representation and we verify the hash of the *physical path*.
The error messages are not taken care of in this CL as those are purely
cosmetic and helps the user understand what is going on.

`fetchGit` has been modified a long time ago to use fetchTree, however,
we don't care about `lastModified` because we are not in a flake
context, this hack introduces a `git-locked` type of input that only
cares about `narHash` being present. This is needed to avoid fetching
the remote repo each time `fetchGit` is evaluated whith the result
present in the store.

we no longer have any experimental features depending on ca derivations,
so we can start removing them. since ca derivations are very invasive we
will need a while to remove all of the explicitly experimental code, and
even then we will not have removed *all* code related to ca derivations.
especially in the derivation goals there is a lot of code that is not as
easy to disentangle from experimental features as some would have hoped.

with impure derivations gone we move on to dynamic derivations. this too
is not done in a single commit because dynamic derivations are invasive,
modifying semantics of all references to derivation output paths and all
derivation dependency calculations. removing dynamic derivations cleanly
is made significantly harder by the multiple did-you-mean-sum types, aka
"wrappers for std::variant", holding all derivation outpath information.

impure derivations are rather unintrusive on their own, at least if
we compare them to dynamic or ca derivations in general, so we will
be done with this soon. as it stands impure derivations cannot work
without ca derivations, and those we *really* want to leave behind.

This was discussed as part of https://git.lix.systems/lix-project/lix/issues/767
with a one month long comment period.
This commit removes the recursive-nix feature from Lix. It has seen
limited usage and is difficult to stabilize, especially on non-Linux
systems where its behavior is underspecified.
Maintaining this feature complicates core work on the store, as we must
account for the potential presence of the daemon in the sandbox, adding
unnecessary complexity. Additionally, its inclusion in the
platform-independent local store creates risks for non-Linux platforms.
For more details on this removal, refer to the release note entry or the
issue entry.

Under chroot or diverted store setups, the filtering logic of
`builtins.filterSource` and `builtins.path` (which shares the same filtering
logic as `filterSource`) would incorrectly pass physical paths to the
filter function instead of logical store paths.
This caused actual breakage in nixpkgs when the `lib.fileset` library was
introduced. Due to this unresolved bug in Nix, the library was forbidden
from use: <https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/369694>.
To the best of our knowledge, this bug has existed since CppNix 2.3.
The existing tests were strengthened to cover these cases, but
additional testing may be required, particularly regarding symlink
handling.

This feature allows calling external binaries starting with `lix-` as
subcommands directly within the `lix` CLI, similar to how Git handles
external commands.
For example, a binary named `lix-example` can now be invoked using `lix
example`.
This change opens up the possibility for broader community-driven
extensions of the Lix CLI, offering flexibility that Flakes has somewhat
restricted by centralizing certain features around its own model of
dependency management.
By enabling users to introduce custom subcommands, we encourage
experimentation and diverse workflows, addressing the needs of those who
seek more modular, feature-rich approaches to package management and
system configuration beyond what Flakes currently offers [1] [2] [3].
This adds `lix` as a new binary to be able to use this feature.

It turns out there is actually some history here.
Eight years ago, in 7f5b750b40, the
pre-build-hook condition got changed to check that useChroot is true
(which we will put down as "eelco making a mistake" because it makes no
sense) and that this->drv was a Derivation (as opposed to a
BasicDerivation as would be the case if the derivation was not present
on disk). The intent of this change was that pre-build-hook would not
run when the derivation doesn't exist, so that some hydras would not
explode.
However, this broke later when both cases became Derivation such that
AFAICT it will always run it if useChroot is true, which is absolutely
not the intended behaviour, but it is a reasonable interpretation as
well, just inconvenient for certain pre-build-hook usages.
So, I think the safest and most compatible behaviour is to run the
pre-build-hook but not guarantee that the derivation actually exists on
disk, since it already didn't run in many cases. Maybe the more correct
way is to actually write out the derivation if we are running a
pre-build-hook, but post-build-hook has exactly the same situation and
it's expected, so idk.

Also, the derivation uses the `outputChecks` feature (and thus `__structuredAttrs`)
to make sure that e.g. the `out` output doesn't reference the `man`
output:
__structuredAttrs = true;
outputs = [ "out" "dev" "doc" "lib" "man" ];
outputChecks.out.disallowedReferences = [ "dev" "doc" "man" ];
With all that in place, the following error was hit on all CppNix / Lix
versions currently supported when trying to build the derivation above:
error: derivation contains an illegal reference specifier 'man'
The following happened here:
* The `man` & `lib` outputs were substituted at some point.
* When register outputs, the reference checks are made.
* `LocalDerivationGoal::checkOutputs` gets a map of all outputs that
were built and are NOT already registered in the store. In the example
above this means `out`, `dev`, `debug` and `doc`.
* `checkOutputs` tries to resolve the `man` output and fails to do so
because it's a store-path that's already registered and thus not part
of the map passed to `checkOutputs`.
Since the map passed to `checkOutputs` is used in various other places
that appear to assume that the paths aren't registered already, I didn't
write the already registered paths into it. Instead, I created a second
map that contains all already registered outputs and pass it as third
argument to `checkOutputs`. If the other lookups fail, this map will be
now checked before the "illegal reference specifier"-error is thrown.
This fixes the problem with `postgresql_14` for me.
Also wrote a small regression test that fails locally without the patch
in place.

The original attempt at this introduced a regression; this commit
reverts the revert and fixes the regression.
This reverts commit 3e151d4d77.
Fix to the regression:
flakeref: fix handling of `?dir=` param for flakes in subdirs
As reported in #419[1], accessing a flake in a subdir of a Git
repository fails with the previous commit[2] applied with the error
error: unsupported Git input attribute 'dir'
The problem is that the `dir`-param is inserted into the parsed URL if a
flake is fetched from the subdir of a Git repository. However, for the
fetching part this isn't even needed. The fix is to just pass `subdir`
as second argument to `FlakeRef` (which needs a `basedir` that can be
empty) and leave the parsedURL as-is.
Added a regression test to make sure we don't run into this again.

`nix-collect-garbage --dry-run` previously elided the entire garbage
collection check, meaning that it would just exit the script without
printing anything.
This change makes the dry run flag instead set the GC action to
`gcReturnDead` rather than `gcDeleteDead`, and then continue with the
script. So if you set `--dry-run`, it will print the paths it *would*
have garbage collected, but not actually delete them.
I filed a bug for this: https://git.lix.systems/lix-project/lix/issues/432 but then realised I could give fixing it a go myself.

The original idea was to fix lix#174, but for a user friendly solution,
I figured that we'd need more consistency:
* Invalid query params will cause an error, just like invalid
attributes. This has the following two consequences:
* The `?dir=`-param from flakes will be removed before the URL to be
fetched is passed to libfetchers.
* The tarball fetcher doesn't allow URLs with custom query params
anymore. I think this was questionable anyways given that an
arbitrary set of query params was silently removed from the URL you
wanted to fetch. The correct way is to use an attribute-set
with a key `url` that contains the tarball URL to fetch.
* Same for the git & mercurial fetchers: in that case it doesn't even
matter though: both fetchers added unused query params to the URL
that's passed from the input scheme to the fetcher (`url2` in the code).
It turns out that this was never used since the query parameters were
erased again in `getActualUrl`.
* Validation happens for both attributes and URLs. Previously, a lot of
fetchers validated e.g. refs/revs only when specified in a URL and
the validity of attribute names only in `inputFromAttrs`.
Now, all the validation is done in `inputFromAttrs` and `inputFromURL`
constructs attributes that will be passed to `inputFromAttrs`.
* Accept all attributes as URL query parameters. That also includes
lesser used ones such as `narHash`.
And "output" attributes like `lastModified`: these could be declared
already when declaring inputs as attribute rather than URL. Now the
behavior is at least consistent.
Personally, I think we should differentiate in the future between
"fetched input" (basically the attr-set that ends up in the lock-file)
and "unfetched input" earlier: both inputFrom{Attrs,URL} entrypoints
are probably OK for unfetched inputs, but for locked/fetched inputs
a custom entrypoint should be used. Then, the current entrypoints
wouldn't have to allow these attributes anymore.

Functional tests can be run with
`meson test -C build --suite installcheck`.
Notably, functional tests must be run *after* running `meson install`
(Lix's derivation runs the installcheck suite in installCheckPhase so it
does this correctly), due to some quirks between Meson and the testing
system.
As far as I can tell the functional tests are meant to be run after
installing anyway, but unfortunately I can't transparently make
`meson test --suite installcheck` depend on the install targets.
The script that runs the functional tests, meson/run-test.py, checks
that `meson install` has happened and fails fast with a (hopefully)
helpful error message if any of the functional tests are run before
installing.
