toonn 2698fe8611 manual: Update Attribute Set section to exclude indented strings and URIs
Indented strings and URIs are string literals but they are not allowed
as names for attrsets, `let` or `inherit`. The following snippets
illustrate that they lead to syntax errors.

==> examples/ind_str-attr.nix <==
{
  ''indented string'' = "error: syntax error, expecting '}'";
}

==> examples/ind_str-inherit.nix <==
{ inherit ({ "non-indented string" = "error: syntax error, expecting ';'"; })
    ''non-indented string'';
}

==> examples/ind_str-let.nix <==
let
  ''indented string'' = "error: syntax error, expecting 'in'";
in
  true

==> examples/uri-attr.nix <==
{
  http://example.org/foo.tar.bz2 = "error: syntax error, expecting '}'";
}

==> examples/uri-inherit.nix <==
{ inherit ({ "http://example.org/foo.tar.bz2" = "error: syntax error, expecting ';'"; })
    http://example.org/foo.tar.bz2;
}

==> examples/uri-let.nix <==
let
  http://example.org/foo.tar.bz2 = "error: syntax error, expecting 'in'";

blokyk 526bcac44a docs: clarify which characters are allowed in a derivation name
Although the fact that some characters are illegal in derivation names
was referenced in some parts of the docs, the actual list was not
documented anywhere, and the only source of truth seems to be the
[store source code](lix/libstore/path.cc).

This adds an admonition in the `derivation` docs that specifies which
characters and strings are actually allowed (especially since some
of them can be somewhat surprising, like the string "..-foo" not
being a valid name because of `..`).

Maximilian Bosch 0488a0181d libcmd: allow setting nested attributes via --arg/--argstr
Closes #496

When running

    nix-build ../nixpkgs --arg config.allowUnfree true -A hello-unfree

the package `hello-unfree` is now built rather than getting an
eval-error rejecting instantiation. This is because `config.allowUnfree`
is now interpreted as nested attribute-set declaration, similar to how
it's done in `nix repl`.

To prevent sudden breakage, this behavior was carefully deprecated with
Nix throwing an error if the identifier for `--arg` is not a pure
identifier, but an expression as above.

Any kind of merging is rejected. I.e. doing

    nix-build ../nixpkgs --arg config '{cudaSupport = true;}' --arg config.allowUnfree true

is prohibited. That way we don't have to think about merge semantics for
cases like this (or even worse `--arg config 'rec { ... }'`). Another
nice side-effect of this is that we don't need to create an EvalState to
force the values and implement merging.

Jade Lovelace f4bdddf0fd tree-wide: log commands executed at --debug --quiet
Fixes: https://git.lix.systems/lix-project/lix/issues/973

Information about which commands were executed is really valuable to
debug Lix and is much more user relevant than the vast majority of the
e.g. build loop junk printed at debug level. Currently we have a *whole
lot* of call sites where we call execv* which should probably be cleaned
up, but that's future work.

I chose to print argv0 rather than the executable path if these differ,
since the code is shorter and since the command could be a fully
resolved symlink or so where argv0 is the actual command name being run.
However, it's not exactly *hard* to write std::ranges::drop_view(args,
1).

Alois Wohlschlager 451a14980b libstore: use OpenSSL for Ed25519 signatures
Previously two cryptography libraries were linked into Lix: OpenSSL used for
hashing and (in usual configurations) indirectly via curl for TLS, and Sodium
used only for handling the Ed25519 path info signatures. The latter is
functionally redundant since OpenSSL supports the same use case as well.
Reimplement the Ed25519 handling using OpenSSL and drop Sodium.

Lily Ballard 97f1c5cfa1 Fix markdown link edge cases
Lowdown doesn't quite conform to CommonMark in parsing shortcut links
that are followed by a parenthesized expression, which looks like
`[link text] (unrelated text)`. CommonMark says the space there is
significant and ensures the `[link text]` is parsed as a shortcut link,
but Lowdown parses this like `[link text](unrelated text)`.

This fixes the output of `nix help`. The other case of a near-link was
in the `nix-env --install` docs, which don't get parsed by Lowdown, but
it turns out the link reference definition was missing. The generated
manpage stripped the brackets but the HTML manual page rendered the
broken link with brackets.

0c2ced0224 feat(nix-instantiate): add --raw flag
The experimental `nix eval` command already supports a `--raw` flag.
This commit implements the same flag for the stable nix-instantiate command.

Until now instructions and scripts that didn't want to rely on experimental
features had to use workarounds such as:

    nix-instantiate --eval <something> | tr -d \"

(which also undesirably also removes double quotation marks within the string), or

    nix-instantiate --eval <something> | jq -j

(which undesirably depends on another package).

Rebecca Turner e7463af241 justfile: enable just build install test
Previously, only the `install` target in the `justfile` took extra
`*OPTIONS`, which meant you could run `just build install test` (or
`just clean setup build install test` for a clean build). This is much
more convenient than `just build && just install && just test`.

However, sometimes you *do* need extra options for some of those other
targets, so over time they have gained extra arguments. But these
prevent you from chaining the targets together:

    $ just clean setup build install test
    rm -rf build
    meson setup build --prefix="$PWD/outputs/out" $mesonFlags build install test
    usage: meson [-h]
                 {setup,configure,dist,install,introspect,init,test,wrap,subprojects,rewrite,compile,devenv,env2mfile,reprotest,format,fmt,help}
                 ...
    meson: error: unrecognized arguments: install test
    error: Recipe `setup` failed on line 13 with exit code 2

As a compromise, I've renamed the targets with extra arguments to
include a `-custom` suffix, and added aliases for the old targets to
call the `-custom`-suffixed target with no extra arguments.

This makes it possible to run `just build install test` again, but keeps
the ability to run `just build-custom EXTRA_MESON_BUILD_ARGS`.

BONUS:
- Added `test-unit` and `test-integration`, because I always forget the
  arguments to run a particular test suite and the names of those test
  suites.
- Added doc comments to `lint` and `lint-fix`.

Linus Heckemann 29b07611b8 gc: allow continuing deletion even if some paths are still live
This adds a gcTryDeleteSpecific operation. This is similar to
gcDeleteSpecific, but will not fail if any of the given paths cannot
be deleted. Paths that could not be deleted are reported in the new
`kept` field of struct GCResults.

This also changes the behaviour of gcDeleteSpecific, such that it will
now continue deleting paths even if it fails to delete one along the
way, and only throw an error once deletion of all the given paths has
been attempted. This seems reasonable to me, because it makes its
behaviour somewhat less surprising -- previously, if some paths were
deletable and others weren't, the deletable ones would be deleted iff
they preceded the live ones in lexical sort order.

This also fixes a regression introduced in
8614cf1334, whereby nix-store --delete
failed to delete paths if they had any dependents -- even if none of
the dependents had GC roots.

The gcTryDeleteSpecific operation is surfaced via additional flags for
the `nix store delete` and `nix-store --delete` commands.

This makes custom garbage-collection logic a lot easier to implement
and experiment with:

- Paths known to be large can be thrown at `nix store delete` without
  having to manually filter out those that are still reachable from a
  root, e.g.
  `nix store delete /nix/store/*mbrola-voices*`

- The --delete-closure option allows extending this to paths that are
  not large themselves but do have a large closure size, e.g.
  `nix store delete /nix/store/*nixos-system-gamingpc*`
  Having an option for this is not strictly necessary, but convenient
  because it doesn't require the user to add an extra `nix-store
  -qR` (or `nix path-info -r`) into their command, nor to rewrite
  their command to use `--stdin` if the closure ends up too large to
  fit on a command line.

- Other heuristics like atime-based deletion can be applied more
  easily, because `nix store delete` once again takes over the task of
  working out which paths can't be deleted.

Andrew Hamon 2bdac6b7ec feat: add a --priority flag to nix-env --install
Backport of https://github.com/NixOS/nix/pull/12275

nix-env can read priorities from a derivations meta attributes, but this
only works when installing a nix expression.

nix-env can also install bare store paths, however meta attributes are
not readable in that case. This means that a store path can not be
installed with a specific priority.

Some cases where it is advantageous to install a store path: a remote
host following a `nix copy`, or any time you want to save some
evaluation time and happen to already know the store path.

This PR addresses this shortcoming by adding a --priority flag to
nix-env --install.
